If you love hiking this is the place to go. There is a small town nestled at the bottom, right by the ocean. Bar Harbor has all the charm you would expect, lots of little shops and restaurants and a quaint down town.
But the real beauty is this state park, there are so many trails to choose from and I added this place to my bucket list to come back to.
I chose the North Trail up Cadillac Mountain and it was a great hike. Challenging and rocky but also scenic along the way and not too much sun on the first half. Pictures really do not do this any justice, and I don't think I have enough words either.
About half way up I did realized that my ambition had gotten the better of me and I was on the fence of turning around. Due to the elevation and , let's be honest, not being in great hiking shape, I was making slower progress than I had thought, having to stop frequently to catch my breath.
But I met this really sweet couple that told me they had parked at the top and were willing to drive me down to my car, so I had to only make it to the top but save myself the descend. Yes I know it felt a bit like a cheat, but the view at the top was majestic and I am so glad I did go all the way up. It was very rewarding to get the 360 view.
I very much doubt though, I could have made it all the way back down. Plus I had to drive 2 hours 4o minutes back to my lovely cottage.
I am currently reading "Grit" by Angela Duckworth and it did make me feel a bit like my perseverance rate is rather low, on the other hand going beyond your own limits while being on your own and having dogs in a cottage waiting for you, makes me think prude choices are underrated.
